About the Iconographer

I am a Byzantine Catholic iconographer living in northern Ohio.  I am married to Michelle and father to Luke, Patric, Joseph, Maria, and Michael.  Before I began painting icons, I studied Byzantine, Russian and western Romanesque iconography and created works in various media under these influences.  I was taught iconographic technique by Bob Wiesner, who was taught by Phil Zimmerman, who was taught by Bishop JOB, the Orthodox bishop of Chicago [OCA].  My iconographic style - and most of my patterns- come from the Russian tradition.

Before I began writing icons --- for an icon is a word of God in line and color --- I wrote a lot with words, especially while I edited Caelum et Terra ["Heaven and Earth"], a Catholic countercultural magazine which was published in the early 1990s.  A few of my prose works can be found at caelumetterra.com. Since January of 2005, I have been contributing to the online Caelum et Terra weblog: caelumetterra.typepad.com/blog.

Please pray for me as I continue in this holy work, that the prayer I pray with each icon I write may be answered by Christ Our Lord: "God grant me a pure heart and a steady hand. Amen."
